This piece has a lot of notes, ornaments, and a wide variance of subdivisions. Even the pulse itself is grouped into two different meters. This isn't marked by the 3 in the time signature. It is vague for a reason, Jason says. The French style has so much more ornamentation and complexity. The 3 isn't 3/2 to 6/4. The reason why is because it really goes back and forth and does not have a set meter. Jason Vieaux highlights these fluctuations throughout the piece to guide you through the Courante. He plays the while counting the beats and the subdivisions out loud.
Even though 3/2 and 6/4 have the same number of beats, the beat emphasis is what changes. Knowing the proper emphasis points on the beats help you properly phrase the piece. As you can tell, Courante is very rhythmically tricky. Take out the ornaments and work on understanding the rhythm without any other distractions.
