Dominant 7th chords - or just plain 7th chords - are heard throughout the blues in really every sub-genre: Texas Blues, Piedmont Blues, Delta Blues and just about any other type of blues that I can think of. So, let's just say they're important.
In this lesson, I'll show you a bit about how they are formed. You really need four notes: the root, third, fifth and flat seventh. Chord formula looks like this:
1 - 3 - 5 - b7
And the sound is instantly bluesy. The tonal quality that the flat seventh adds to a chord is interesting to say the least. Compared to a major chord it adds a little tension to the chord. However, you describe it though, I'm sure that after you strum a few, you'll hear the blues.
These things just scream the blues.
I've included a TAB for this lesson that shows you a few of the very common 7th chords. Although there are many different versions of 7th chords all over the neck, the TAB for this lesson shows just enough to get you started.
Be sure to go check out the TAB back on BGI's website, here's the link for that:

Have fun and keep picking!
